Things To Do in Tucson: The Local's Short List

People move to Tucson for prices and stay for this. The desert is the main event, the food is the second, and the calendar — Gem Show to rodeo to All Souls — fills the rest.

The desert, first

Saguaro National Park wraps the city east and west — go at golden hour. Sabino Canyon is the beloved local hike-and-tram canyon in the Foothills. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is part zoo, part botanical garden, and the single best introduction to how this desert actually works. Gates Pass at sunset is a rite of passage.

Eat like it matters — it does here

Tucson was the first U.S. city designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, built on 4,000 years of food heritage: Sonoran hot dogs, carne asada, mesquite and tepary beans, and a Mexican food scene locals argue about with genuine passion. Start with our best restaurants guide and the Fourth Avenue and downtown corridors.

The calendar

Late January–February: the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase takes over the whole city, and the Tucson Rodeo gives schools "rodeo break." Spring: the Fourth Avenue Street Fair. Autumn: the All Souls Procession, one of the most moving public events in America. Winter is simply peak season for everything outdoors.

Day trips that justify the car

Mt. Lemmon — pine forest and 30° cooler, an hour up. Bisbee — an art town in a canyon. Tombstone — the OK Corral, touristy and worth it once. Sonoita/Elgin — Arizona wine country. Mission San Xavier del Bac — the White Dove of the Desert, 20 minutes south and non-negotiable.
